The Fashion Duel: Greenpeace Takes on Fashion Houses

The Fashion Duel: Greenpeace Takes on Fashion Houses

The past Milan Fashion Week, which took off on February 20th, also saw fashion brands being subjected to strong sensitizing attempts by Greenpeace, who has been fighting for the environment ever since 1971. The latest awareness campaign is called “The Fashion Duel,” and it literally challenges all major fashion houses that do not yet make use of eco-friendly materials.

The suggestive Castello Sforzesco in Milan was the setting for Greenpeace’s own runaway. The activists modeled against all those brands that still refuse to make use of eco-friendly materials and fabrics that would reduce pollution and prevent deforestation. Many were the fashion houses that were called to stand up for Mother Earth, but amongst them only Valentino Frashion Group passed with flying colors, being eligible for a prestigious certificate praising the transparency policy of the brand’s spinnerets. Other important brands, such as Hermès, Chanel, and Dolce & Gabbana—to name but a few—have failed to meet expectations and consider Greenpeace’s appeal.

Greenpeace’s regular inspections in the fashion industry put a special focus on the trade of materials and fabrics; fashion houses cannot make use of leather which origins from safeguarded areas, just as luxury packagings cannot be made out of paper provided by corporate entities that are responsible for the destruction of animal habitats. Fabrics are also closely monitored for toxic substances that, if used regularly, might pollute ground waters.

“The Fashion Duel”’s gauntlet is thrown down at the feet of both fashion houses and consumers, to raise awareness on global environmental issues and take an important step toward a real safeguarding of our Earth, so unrelentingly tortured by man’s abuse.
